NesArtist, Iceland Fall 202  https://neslist.is

The NesArtist residency program is located in the small fishing village of Skagaströnd in bay Húnaflói on the north coast of Iceland. Here, I will explore new creative material to develop Script for Landscape, a scenography of participatory environment inspired by the large contrasts in the unique geology of the Northern Icelandic landscape, ranging from volcanic scenes to glacial rivers, canyons and waterfalls, as well as through the local stories and myths that Icelanders associate with many of these natural wonders. This new creative research will strive to establish novel methods of engaging creative material (combining projections of collected audio-visual compositions of landscapes, layers of transparent fabrics and participants’ drawings, voice recordings and/or conversations) in providing audiences of the environment with a powerful sense of belonging to the sheer force of contrasting nature, as well as a profound connection to the communities that belong to these lands. By participating in the performance of landscapes, and by relating to stories of scenography that not only envelops the audience’s entire physical being, but also inspires them to act, this project aims to raise awareness of our belonging to the larger context of the environment and its performance through our individual roles in the scenographies of global ecologies threatened by climate change.

BigCi Wollemin National Park Winter 2020-2021  https://bigci.org/artist-residency

At BigCi residency program at Wollemi National Park, I will explore new creative material for a participatory scenography of immersive environment, Bioluminescence, inspired by the phenomenon of the bioluminescent glow worms. Often found in the forested areas of the park, particularly in the Newnes Glow Worm Tunnel, the glow worms are tiny insect-like creatures that produce light reminiscent of the starry night sky to attract prey into their long sticky threads.  The Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa describes how the sound of dripping water inside of a cave or the smell of a meadow with flowering plants gives a rise to spatial experiences, which he refers to as the “flesh of the space”. Starting from this premise, I will go beyond reconstructing the experience of the glow worms and strive to find a unique combination of simple technologies, such as small LED lights, fluorescent matter, microfibres, etc., novel materials (ranging from a variety of threads to glass, acrylic, etc.) and structure-born sound (sound that is produced by vibrating matter such as threads, small objects, etc.) to recreate the overall atmosphere of their natural habitat.
